My Siamese mix Kona is an older gal @ 13 yrs old, and has an issue that seems to be getting worse with age... a few of her nails (on the front paws) are much thicker than normal, and as a result they become stuck to her pads rather quickly. I hadn't cut her nails in a while, and today I noticed her favoring the front right foot - so I went to investigate, and three of her nails were stuck to the pads! I've only seen one do this in the past, and usually only if I go a LONG time without cutting them.

After seeing the situation, I took (human) nail clippers and very gently cut them off the pads... one was so tight it left red indents, which would explain the limping both before and after. These nails are probably 2-3x the "height" of a normal nail, but luckily they are brittle and easy to cut. Has anyone heard of this problem, or have any idea what might be causing it? I remember asking my vet a long time ago, but can't remember off-hand what she said about it - I'll ask again next time we go, which won't be for another month or two. In the meantime I will have to be more diligent, and start trimming them weekly. Any advice would be appreciated, and I'll see if I can get a picture later... she left me with battle wounds after the procedure, so I'm not going to bother her now.

My first thought would be a fungal nail infection/infection of the nail bed - it will certainly cause "horny", brittle nails. In humans, the nails will discolour as well. I've just never heard of it in cats.

I know, huh? I've had cats my entire life, and have never seen this before! It is kinda like my baby toe, which is a bit thicker and more brittle (like on most people's feet). But we don't have toe pads right under, and I can go get a pedicure. Guess I'll have to consult my vet on this one...
