The Drinkwell 360 Stainless is back by the way:

Amazon.com: Drinkwell 360 Pet Fountain, Stainless Steel: Kitchen & Dining

Drinkwell Pet Fountain–Veterinary Ventures Inc.

Also the Pioneer one comes in a smaller model, but the pics make it look like it might not be all stainless, dunno:

Amazon.com: Pioneer Pet Stainless Steel Fountain Raindrop Design: Kitchen & Dining

Since I ended up with two Drinkwell Platinums after we originally got one for each cat, I just rotate them. It gets a full regular dishwasher cycle in between, and I don't have to have it out of service for the nearly 2 hours that takes. Seems to be working okay. I also have the proper brush for brushing out the part that really won't get clean in the dishwasher, which is the thin tube that goes up from the pump. And I'm prone to rinsing the stuff off after the dishwasher so no soap residue.

Plastic is perhaps not the ideal material but it should be okay if kept up well when it's just water. If choosing something new you might not want to choose it, but I wouldn't just throw out everything plastic either. On the other hand, with the food, I've gone to everything in stainless bowls. They're only a couple bucks and work well. I do have the Neater Feeder setup which is plastic, but that just holds the bowls up and keeps the messy cat from getting the food everywhere. That can go in the dishwasher occasionally as well. You don't have to get extra bowls from them; I just got standard pint bowls (think that's the size) at local pet stores. This gives me enough that I can go a few days then it's usually time to run the dishwasher again anyway.

Good point Greg42 - the Pioneer does come in a smaller model (I have 11 cats....they can't come in a size big enough). Also - my first Drinkwell fountain worked great....got it in 2002.....it is still going. The second one I wound up throwing out because it was starting to die...but again, had a good run. I've had the Pioneer for about 6 months. I think I'll try the Drinkwell Stainless when the other Drinkwell gives up the ghost....or I get tired of cleaning it.

Okay, maybe it is me...but $75 for a water bowl for the cat?! He can drink fine out of a bowl, or in the sink if I am washing dishes or something. My Grandparents from the Depression would turn over in their graves...

Believe me I know what you mean, but it gets some cats to drink more and the cost of treating a UTI is way more than $75, not to mention the pain and possible serious complications for the cat.

Generally the cost is spread over several cats. In my case I spent about $50 on the one I bought originally (then bought another when they wouldn't share, and that was useless, although the second cat had CRF and splashed the water incessantly so I tried ANYTHING for her, that was her second different kind of fountain!)

With the Drinkwell Platinum it's a combination fountain and long-term waterer because it holds about a gallon of water.

Hey - I can understand if one doesn't have the money to spend on their kitties.... Right now, I am fortunate that I do have extra $$ to spend on them.... Plus, Ozzie and Phizzie both have issues with UTIs....will just Phizzie now; Ozzie had PU surgery (that wasn't cheap) and he's been fine since. Max is in CRF and he loves the fountain... Hey, anything that helps. I was not fortunate to be able to have children of my own and I'm 36....but I am fortunate to have fur babies - so that's where my extra $$ goes.... too bad there aren't any tax breaks though!

jasper12: May I point out that $75 was a lot of money in your grandparents' time. In the Depression, one could buy a nice dinner for 10 cents!

Many cats love to drink running water, but it still seems expensive, even with todau's devalued money.

I've been looking at these types of things lately...:

Amazon.com: Sink Drink - Turns a Faucet Into a Fountain for Your Cat: Kitchen & Dining

Amazon.com: Lixit Water Faucet Attachment: Kitchen & Dining

I'll be sure to report back if I do try either one.

The Sink Drink is pretty neat. I think the 2nd one would be what I would get if it were for mine as she likes to drink from the running water, not the bowl. Thanks for those links.
