We got our first pet (an adult cat from the animal shelter) about three weeks ago, so this is all new to me. I noticed today that his nose is running. Should we take him to the vet for that, or is it a cold that will go away on its own?

Is your cat sneezing, lethargic, sounds congested? Any excess discharge in the tear ducts (sleep seeds, crusties, whatever)? If any of the above apply, it is important to get your cat to the vet. It is possible that it is just allergies, but cats also get colds (upper respiratory) and you want them to get on antibiotics ASAP as the longer you wait, the longer it takes for them to overcome the cold. It is perhaps one of the most pitiful things to go through and something our foster cats are sick with when they first come to our house.

Probably not. Cats are notorious for getting upper respiratory tract infections. Just make sure he gets plenty of clean water and high quality food. Keep an eye on him and if he stops eating/pooing or loses weight or gets noticeably worse, then take him in.
In the past I have had cats with colds. It should go away in a week or so.
Anything that is new and unusual things going on, Definitely would!
besides, a "cold" in a kitty, is Way worse than a cold in a human.
in any case watch it, and if still running within a day or 2 at latest than yes, go to vet.
also, when you got from shelter, just for that reason alone I would make a trip to the vet for over all check up and everything, an animals body in stressed and immune system lowered when in a stressful environment and lots of other external factors that could compromise health.
Since they're a shelter cat, I probably would do a vet visit. Pretty common for a cat to pick up an upper respiratory bug from there, and a round or shot of antibiotics can help them fight it off if it's bacterial.

You have obviously not had a cat with upper respiratory because it rarely goes away on its own. It leads to bloody noses, lack of appetite and a very unhappy cat with breathing problems.
Your cat sounds like it just had allergies and you are very lucky that it was just that.
YES! The cat needs to see a vet. Something like this only gets worse on it's own.
