The way you phrased the question skews the poll, but I had my own opinion beforehand.

The people that I know that have declawed their cats had NO IDEA what was truly involved in declawing. They were shocked when I explained that a cat's claws are NOT like our fingernails.

To remove their claws, the bone, nerve, joint capsule, collateral ligaments, and the extensor and flexor tendors are all AMPUTATED.

Education... education...education.

Lola4, are lots of folks in the dark about declawing? Is it still being done much? Are some vets still pushing to have it done so they can make more money?

Don't know much about cats, but it seems that your poll question is biased. Do you really think it's a fair question, the way you put it? I guess you could have put it another way, such as, "your cat just damaged your third $5,000 Ethan Allen couch with his claws, what would you do?"

Why is it "biased" to point out that "declawing" is actually a euphemism for partial amputation of a cat's toes? Anyone who values their sofa over the health and well-being of their pet doesn't deserve to own one.

I have several Ethan Allen couches in my home, and yes, they have born the brunt of claws. Did that make me turn around to amputate my babies' paws? Um, NO! Yes, believe me, at first I was very upset, for I waited a very long time in my life to be able to afford such expensive furniture.

But!!! Bottom line!!!

LOVE IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THEN A COUCH. AND YOU SURE CANNOT TAKE A COUCH WITH YOU WHEN IT IS TIME TO GO ON TO OTHER WORLDS.....

BUT LOVE ABSOLUTELY DOES COME WITH YOU!

And as for the question posed here....what would I do? As I see it I have two choices, no actually three. One, I can get rid of my family just so that I can sit on perfect, expensive couches, minus the purrs and the cuddling. Or, two, I could have their nails ripped out along with bones and tendons and ligaments. Or, I can embrace my family of felines, loving them, honoring them, with much gratitude in my heart for them being in MY life, and accepting them for who they are. I've chosen option number 3. I would not trade a perfect couch for any of my cats. I am not able to even imagine my life without them in it.

Yes, there is disciplining in all this, and some, not all, have learned not to use my couches as scratching posts. With consistency on my part in telling them NO, and using the water bottle, I have today more cats in favor of not using my couches as their personal scratching posts. And that is good!

A sofa or a pet?

If you don't see the blatant bias in the question, then nothing I write will get you to understand.

Then why should I pay any attention to your comments? The people on this forum know a whole lot about cats, more than you could ever imagine. So, maybe if I am going to have a discussion about Tampa Bay, or the Bucs, I'll look you up.
