Yes, I did that on some of them, but others had to be cut out because they were down to the skin. Now he gets brushed once a week, and rolls over on his back to be brushed. As long as it doesn't pull, he likes it, and there's no pulling now.

^ Only the vet is qualified to tell you what's wrong with this cat, and help you get it healthy again. Good luck!

As to the topic itself, which while it's old it's very relevant this time of year...

My Nimbus cat has the worst case of mats we've seen to date. It got away from us before we even knew what was happening! He hates to be brushed and most of the time he keeps himself adequately groomed, I just keep an eye on his "pantaloons" and "armpits" for problems. Well this year he also got mats behind his ears, AND all over his flanks. It seemed like the appeared almost overnight.

We are taking care of it, he lets me use a set of trimmers (electric, smaller than full size clippers and not as loud, made and sold for animals)...to shave mats off, of course he has little patience with being restrained for this and I get one or two and he's pretty much done. We also brush him thoroughly every day now.

As for scissors, I am aware of the danger in that. I've seen how the skin is. I only use a small set of scissors if he's got a mat that's really dangling loose by a few connecting hairs, not close to the skin but like an inch or more away from the skin, and he's calm enough to be still for a second. My Grandma once made the mistake of trying to de-mat a long haired cat with scissors...what a horror story!

I'm just trying not to take off too much fur, just the mats, I really would rather we didn't have to all-out shave him...

The springtime...it's rough on my poor pretty boy...
