My Molly, six year young calico, was just diagnosed today to be in heart failure, with heart murmurs. She is scheduled to have an ultrasound of the heart Thursday morning, after having xrays done today.
OMG! At 6 she is still a young cat. I assume the symptoms came on very suddenly.

She has been given Lasix, a diuretic because there is fluid around her heart, making it difficult for her to breathe. I have Lasix pills to give Molly every 8 hours. Yes, the Lasix is working for she has voided twice all within one half an hour, and her breathing is not so labored.
Well thank God for that.

We will be doing no heroics here, by having her hospitalized on IV's and on O2. We will take care of her at home, making her as comfortable as possible. When the time comes that she is just struggling too hard, we will know what to do. She also hasnt' eaten in 2 days, so if she doesn't by this evening, I will be feeding her by hand.
Hospitalization sometimes saves their lives. What would they want to give her IVs for? Meds she can't take by mouth? Is she dehydrated?

Yes, I am a wreck. I am shaking, in shock, crying. I just cannot believe this is happening. And I want to know why, with these heart murmurs, why wasn't this picked up when she last saw the vet 2 years ago?
Please pray for Molly, and for myself. I don't know how to handle this.
Just hang in there. There are meds today that perform near miracles.
I had a beautiful orange boy die sudenly. I had a necropsy to see why and it was cardiomyopathy. The vet said he had gotten a virus before I adopted him (he was maybe 6 y/o) and it had weakened his heart.
I'm so sorry to hear that. That's good that the Lasix is helping her in some way. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Molly during this difficult time. Hugs to you and your little Molly, and I pray, in some way that she gets better.
I'm so sorry about Molly. Sending lots of prayers and hugs to both of you. Hang in there Garden...it is the season of miracles. I'm praying one is sent your way.
I am overwhelmed by all the responses here. I am deeply deeply touched. I thank each one of you.
Cat Eyes.....No, she is not dehydrated, but the doc said something about hospitalization if she started turning blue and having a lot of trouble breathing. So far, the Lasix is doing it's job. Her RR is down from 60 to 32, which is a huge difference.
As I said, I am open to medication. And also, trying to combine that with homeopathy to encourage her heart to heal. Evidently, with murmurs, the valves are not working properly so the heart chambers are not filling nor emptying properly. Hence, the reason for the edema (swelling) around her heart.
Again, I am deeply touched. With all these prayers going, and because we are in the season of miracles, I will THINK miracles. Wipe the tears away and begin walking in faith. Not easy. No. But, dang it, I will do it for Molly's sake!
