Dear Pet Parents,
My name is Tim Callahan and I'm the CEO of WellPet, makers of Wellness® natural pet food. Over the years, we at WellPet have worked hard to earn the reputation of being a company that does everything possible for the pets that depend on us.

WellPet is committed to delivering the very best in pet food nutrition, as nothing is more important than the well-being of our dogs and cats. So when we found through product quality testing that specific product runs of our Wellness canned cat food might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), we decided to voluntarily recall them.

Please know, the vast majority of products tested had the appropriate levels of thiamine; however, with the number of recipes we offer, we did not want to make this more confusing. Therefore to avoid confusion and in an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all canned cat products with the specific date codes noted below. Cats fed only product with inadequate levels of thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

Though the chance of developing this deficiency is remote, withdrawing these products is the right thing to do and we are removing it from retailers' shelves.

The lots involved in this voluntary recall are:
Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13;
Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with best by date of 10NOV13 and 17NOV13.

If you have cat food from these lots, you should stop feeding it to your cats. You may call WellPet at 1-877-227-9587 to arrange for return of the product and reimbursement.

No other Wellness products that your pets currently enjoy are impacted, so you can continue to feed your pets Wellness with full confidence. This is an isolated situation, as we have had only one reported issue. We are taking all the necessary steps to ensure it does not happen again.

Speaking on behalf of our entire Company, I apologize for any concerns this may have caused you. As a parent of a yellow lab named Hope, I understand the sense of responsibility we all share for our dogs and cats. Rest assured, product quality and safety will always be our top priority.

Lola, here's quick question. Since I've used Wellness for a yr now, I assume the 5 oz cans I've given -- have included these dates/lots at some point! So, I have about 40 cans left yet, & all these 5 oz Chicken cans have dates of 10/13 & 11/13 -- thus past the last date of in recall (9/13).

These are ok? But what to do re: the older ones that I must have used prior, since I gave her Wellness Chicken 5oz for all of 2010 up til now?

Hmm, should I test for B1 deficiency?

I'm with you. I don't have any Wellness CURRENTLY in the cupboard with the recalled dates, but I imagine they probably HAVE been fed the cans with the dates in the recall. *sigh*

The Wellness folks mentioned they are recalling all flavors and sizes, as to not cause any confusion by giving a too detailed explanation as to what flavors, sizes, etc. may have been affected. I think I would write Wellness and ask them to share the "detailed" info, if that is the only brand you feed.

Don't you feed your cat(s) other brands as well? If I understand correctly, a cat will be at less risk (or none), if being fed more than one brand.

I just Googled thiamine deficiency in cats... to learn what symptoms to look for and such. *sigh* again

I just got 30 cans on Saturday. Out of those 30 cans, I have 13 (so far) with those dates. But I haven't gone through the ones in my cabinet yet.

The dates on mine say Oct. '13 & Nov. '13. But I assume since I used this brand (Wellness Chicken cans of 5oz) ALL last yr, that I've used prior dated cans (though likely involved in the recalled lots) for extended periods -- like the 24 days it takes her to eat a whole case (@ 1 can/day). This isn't good news.

I don't see any deficiency signs in our 7, but...

I also feed more than one brand of wet food. I may take in one cat to be tested. If is he good, they all should be.

All the cats are going to be fed Doritos this week. At least I know what is in their ingredients...more often than not.

I too feed more than one brand and this is why. Of the current cases I am/was feeding from, two are within the dates. None of my cats show any of the symptoms listed for B-1 deficiency.

Quote:
From the press release, the symptoms of B-1 deficieincy are:Cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
Wellness® Press Release

What REALLY irritates me is that I was just at the feed store yesterday purchasing more Wellness and they did not mention the recall. I hate the service in that store but have no other place to get the Wellness. All the other brands I use I buy on line, but the Wellness is way less expensive at the feed store (they don't carry the other brands I use)

The new cases I just bought are not within the date range of the recall.

If you have foods in the date range there is a number to call to arrange for returning the remaining cans and being reimbursed.

ALL my cans of Wellness (and all of mom's) fall into that date range...this stinks royally. I'm glad I feed them a variety of food every day, I'm not seeing any SX here, but the fact that this type of oversight happened at all is very disconcerting. Guess I'm done with Wellness now...they're too big for their britches anymore. Unbelievable.
