I have always found it very interesting how three completely different species, humans, dogs, and cats, live in the same home.
My dog, Sam, lived with cats his whole life, but had different relationships with each cat. Mickey, our older cat, never liked Sam, but he did not care, Sam always went up to Mickey, continuing to expect Mickey to like him, they frequently just ignored each other.
Sam loved Beau, our other cat, and carried him around the house in his mouth. Beau was frequently dripping with dog slobber. They played with each other, chased each other, and slept together.
It is just amazing to me how cute dogs and cats are playing together. Tell us your "Dog and Cat" story...

We had 2 big dogs when we brought home our first kitten Patty. I swear this was the happiest day of our dog Jake's life. We had her in a room behind a baby gate at first and he spent almost every minute looking at her with a big dopey grin on his face and an adoring look in his eyes. When we started letting her out, he followed her everywhere, not chasing her, keeping a respectful distance. After a couple of weeks he realized she just didn't want a doggie friend and backed off, but he always liked her. We got another kitten 5 years later who wanted to play with the dogs. This completely confused them because crabby Patty was the only cat they'd ever known. The sad part was that Jake could have finally had the cat friend he'd always wanted, but by this time he was very ill and couldn't enjoy it. He passed away a couple of months later. Mickey does play with the dogs we have now, though.

I always marvel at how I stumbled into the shelter and, among the many cute furbutts looking for forever homes, was able to choose (or should I say, was chosen by) a cat that is so tolerant of a 95 lb. dog with a high prey drive who thinks it's just wild fun to chase and pester her; the dog's favorite game is putting her face in the cat's in order to provoke a playful series of swats to the snout.
However, my dog's sister was also fond of cats, although rather than simply chase, she would put the head of her preferred feline friend in her mouth. Repeatedly. But would never harm the cat in any way, although the cat was always *covered* in dog saliva afterwards.
My dog's favorite game is flushing the cat out of the landscaping and/or nature preserve around our home. The cat also seems to enjoy it, outsmarting the dog each time by seeking a high perch from which she mockingly watches the dog continue to search for her below. But the dog always manages to succefully flush her out and round her up. It's amazing that a lot of people associate GSD's with protection when they are, in fact, instincitively great herders.
Here are a recent pic of the terrible twosome together:

Well, my cats are older, they were 12 & 13 when we got our 1st dog. We got our 2nd dog a week ago. Our cats are now 13 & 14. They mostly just live under our bed. lol Our calico hates everyone but hubby & I. Person or animal. Black cat loves everyone. She hides from the dogs, but tolerates them licking her. lol

BTW, here is Mickey as a kitten with Jake. If Patty had been like this years earlier, Jake would have been over the moon.

And Mickey with his sisters today. He lies with them, bats his paws at them, pulls on their lips and ears and sometimes takes giant "Banzai!" leaps on their heads. They think he's great.
I had to rotate the picture, I don't know how to resize w/o cropping and I couldn't crop out any more.

years ago we had a rescue female dog named Rags. She had a litter when I rescued her from under a vacant house. After we had her at least 3 years-and fixed that long, we got a new kitten named Me Too. Me too would nurse from Rags with a passion and Rags seemed to not only tolerate it but she enjoyed it. Finally when her teats got all red and inflamed from kitty nursing, we had to separate them. Rags actually went into a bit of mourning. It was so sweet to watch them and they really loved each other.
I've always had cats and dogs together. Never one without the other and they always seemed very happy. Today we have 2 Ragdolls which weigh more than our Bichon and are longer legged. they play and try to steal food from each other.

i was housesitting for a family friend that had a large golden retriever, and a black cat (declawed). the cat would sit on the stairs as if guarding them, playing toll taker. it would not let the dog up the stairs, when the dog would approach the stairs, the cat would reach out and slap the dog in the face. but it appeared to be a game of theirs. it was friggin hilarious.

They had been the best of pals since day one. Unfortunately, Chelsea the dog was euthanized a few months ago (insulanoma - tumor on pancreas). I know Trixie the cat misses her because now all her attention is focused on us and she demands our attention in return.

Oh, sorry about your dog. Cats do demand more attention when they are an only pet. My cat, Beau, drove me CRAZY, when his dog, cat, and his two kids left for one summer.
