We have a cat that occasionally won't use the litter box to poop. Every three weeks or so she will walk around meowing with a miserable sounding meow and then squat down somewhere and act like she's going to poop, then get up, walk around some more and do it again until she finally poops somewhere on the carpet. Sometimes she'll do this a couple of days in a row, then everything's fine for a few weeks. Any one had similar problems and if so what resolved them?

Is she constipated?

Now that I think about it, that might be the issue. We feed her dry food. Do they make kitty laxatives? LOL!

Yikes! That might be a whole different kinda bad! My guess is constipation. I'm not sure what to do for that. Does she have lots of water and get exercise?

Our youngest has taken to pooping in certain spots. Since the carpet was new when we moved in, I don't think it's a marking problem, but I think "the scent" is there now so he thinks those spots are his toilet. I was not encouraged by what I read online to get smells out. Ugh. Cats. Who needs kids?

Get her on a canned grain free diet. Chronic constipation leads to megacolon. Once every few weeks now isn't too bad but it will get worse. An improved diet is what she needs, not laxatives.

Also, brush her daily and make sure she gets plenty of exercise from interactive play with you.

Do the diet change slowly of course, but she really needs to be off the dry food.

Rather than turn to medications and other unnatural things, improve the cats diet by switching to canned food.

Thanks for the replies! We'll switch to canned and see if that helps.

She ended up getting really lethargic the day after I posted so we took her into the vet yesterday. Turns out she was pretty stopped up and on the way to developing megacolon. The vet gave her an enema and some medication to help clear things up and had us switch to canned food. She has a lot more energy today. We had to give her a bath this afternoon since she was pretty messy from the vet trip. That was fun....along with giving her the medication via syringe in her mouth. She likes to spit it out. Just wanted to update my post. Thanks everyone.
