Not a chance. This was tried in the early days and ended pretty disastrously. I can let the sad-eyed look, and yowled entreaties, not affect me. But Weasie took it several steps farther. She peed on furniture and the living room rug as well as tore wallpaper at the seams. All that behavior stopped as soon as she got a taste of the great outdoors.
The issue always becomes moot when wintertime rolls around. Her "rheumatism" completely curbs the urge for adventure. She never caught any birds but starlings and house sparrows. Arthritis precludes her climbing, so the only successful hunting she can have is when one of the "invasive species" avians - young and naive - roosts in a hedge.
Do I have reservations? Sure, always have. But what's been left untold is how the neighbors rallied to help find her. A cat-owned friend of mine lives in the same building that Weeze had her B & B experience in. Upon seeing a copy of the now-famous flier she immediately dialed the provided phone number to identify the "elderly cat" as well as me. Others tipped me off to the notices and made calls as well. Had I not spotted one myself I still would've experienced the same outcome, in other words. Good neighbors really do make a good neighborhood. Now several new Weasie fans have been added to a list that already numbered in the dozens, all watchful of my and others' pets.
Tonight I brought home a copy of the "elderly cat found" flier and have it tacked up in the front entry hall.
Okay. I know that when Beau went MIA, the kids were all crying, and when that cat came home, I swore he was never going out again. He tried to sneak out, and I would chase him, and bring him in. I did let him out on a leash, or in his stroller after that. But he was no longer a free wild cat. He adjusted to his new status.
And sadly, this makes her a perfect victim of every dog and sadistic kid in your neighborhood. I'm glad she made it home.
Awww...Don't be a Debbie Downer! It's so nice to have a happy ending for a change. And let's not forget that Weasie has made it to 19 with this life style.
I'm happy for you and Weasie.
