The "rule" came about because: cats instinctively prefer to have a choice of where they toilet, many cats prefer to pee in one and poop in another, many do not like to use a box that has anything already in it (regardless of whether it is from that cat or another), and because cats can be territorial and not want to share.
If one big and one small is working for you, that's a good thing! If it wasn't working, you'd know it, and if you were having trouble with inappropriate elimination without health problems we'd be advising you to add litter boxes.
I live in a tiny one bedroom apartment. Less than 600 Sq feet. All four boxes are in one area, behind where the water heater is. They are double-decker, 3 elevated, one underneath.
This apartment, while tiny, is really perfect for cats, I will probably never move!
Occasionally, when I have a sick, elderly or otherwise disabled cat, I squeeze a fifth in my bathroom specifically for that one cat, but currently all are young and agile, so I don't have to keep one in my bathroom.
I don't have much company, but when anyone has ever seen my giant litter box, they always comment on it.
I guess you are right--if it didn't work for them, I'd know, wouldn't I!
Rule of thumb is 1 cat box per 2 cats. Three boxes work out just fine for me. I dont plan to get anymore cats but ill always have at least 2. I had 9 at one time & that wont happen again. Its tough enough dealing with 5 but 2 are over 15 & their age is showing.

You have it backwards. "Rule of thumb" is actually "One box per cat, plus one."
One cat, two boxes, two cats, three boxes, and so on. But, if the boxes are kept clean, and the cats are managing without problems, whatever works for each individual situation, is best. It's when problems start, that we start advising people to add boxes.
And also 1 box per floor of the home + 1.
So, if your home has 2 floors = 2 boxes + 1 more (optional).
