Because dogs like dens, an instinct in them. The smaller and cozier, the better. Mine will ignore their commodious beds to go sleep on the pad in the crate as they feel safe in there.

Ha ha mine are the opposite. The dog wants to stretch out and lounge on the couch or my bed, and one cat tries to fit into the tiniest spots she can find (the bathroom sink, little boxes and baskets, etc and she is big girl!)
