i took edgar in today for his neuter and his shots!!!! and guess what- no microchip.

Get him microchipped yourself, as soon as you can. It is such a great peace of mind for me knowing that if Maxwell ever got out (he is totally indoors) that the chances of him coming home are better with his chip. Try looking at the local animal shelter, they may do a low cost chip. I know when I adopted Max, they did the chip as a standard part of the adoption cost, so maybe they will do something to help you out.

That is a really amazing offer. And it just goes to show that you are as passionate about helping someone keep their animal as you were about trying to insist she do the right thing. A very cool offer.
just wanted to jump in here....I've never had any of my cats mirco chipped b/c they have always been indoor only and don't see the need.
also is everyone aware there are alot of problems associated with injecting a foreign object into the body (human as well as animals)....these things can migrate to a different location, they are linked to FIBROSARCOMAS in animals..and these tumors are very aggressive.
I hope everyone considering this will read these warnings first... chipmenot-scientific-evidence

I think you have to take it on a case-by-case basis. A cat who has previously been a stray may be one who's more likely to sneak out at times. A cat who never shows an interest in going out might mean a different choice.

i think i mentioned in my earlier post about my former roommate, who moved out a month before i moved BACK in, having a cat that she took in as a stray while living here. he looks like edgar's bro, white mustache and all.
maybe its possible that his coming into the house, letting us pick him up, etc, is a consequence of him seeing his brother with my former roommate. maybe he got the message that he had friends here. i sure told him that, from the first second i held him- "i told ya, you got friends here". i think he listened. : )
i kept calling the neuter mobile, as i am on a pretty tight budget and if i could get it free this week, i was going to try. after three phone calls (you have to make an appointment) and no word back, i took a long look at my bank account and said, "edgar is more important than money. money is a renewable resource, and edgar is not". so i went and bought his kitty taxi, litter box, and today he came home from the vet all neutered and with his shots. i have a little folder with all his info in it, and it made me SO happy to say i am not only a proud mama but a responsible one too. i was so relieved to find out there was no chip. as much as i loved him, i knew despite my earlier stubborness that someone else could be missing this fella....and who wouldn't? he grows even more affectionate as time goes on. his favorite position is putting his arms around my neck and nuzzling my face. and he was such a brave boy when i put him in the pet taxi this morning- he only meowed a little in the vet's office, and carried himself like a gentleman.
i couldn't afford to get him his own chip, but i will in another month or so, when i can afford it. so, edgar has a happy ending, and i am looking forward to the journey with him. i wouldn't trade him for all the money in the world. officially, i am crazy cat lady, calling up my big sis (who has a much beloved cat herself) in a fit with questions ("what's the best cat litter?" "is fancy feast once in a while ok?" etc etc) and finding myself just wanting to be with him all the time. i wish there was a happy cat land where i could take him with me everywhere. my humble home feels like a real home now and i am so happy, and i am sure edgar will be happy once he wakes up from his post-neutering all-day-nap-plus-waking-and-wobbling. thanks for all your replies.

interesting discussion, I agree we always need to weigh the pros and cons of every decision we are making regarding our animals and chips/vacs/food etc...
I can see in many instances that chips are warranted, but just shouldn't become the norm.
