So I went to a local no-kill shelter, and adopted a lovely 4 year old black male DSH. He is the sweetest thing. In actuality, he adopted me, because he was trying to get my attention, and kept purring and rubbing against me in his cage.

The owner of the shelter told me that he had 2 strikes against him being an older cat, and then being a black cat, as a lot of people do not like adopting them because of the superstition. I have always adopted older cats, as I feel they are already litterbox trained, and generally get left in a shelter so long, that by the time they do get adopted, they are only too happy.

Just trying to figure out why more people don't adopt older pets in general? Also are so many people really that superstitious that they ignore what could be a great pet just because of the color of his fur?
Hey, Brooklyn! I am shouting to you from Queens! LOL

You did do a great thing for that cat. And yes, it is true that it is hard to get homes for black cats. It's a bad situation out there. At the North Shore Animal League America they told me they cannot take black kittens very often because they are passed over and grow up to be "unadoptable" older black kittens and cats. So, they tell me only to bring a litter that has, maybe, possibly, one black kitten, and only ONCE IN A WHILE because they just can't place them very easily, little cute things only 8 to 10 weeks, for heaven's sake, and no one wants them.

Matter of fact, I am sitting with an all black, gorgeous, sweet as sugar, 5 month old kitten a few feet from me, taken from a feral colony with an injury and hope to find her a home. Hope.

Re: adopting older pets, a friend always wants them around your cat's age, 4 or 5 even, because she wants a calmer, quieter cat. There you go.

Many, most, I guess, people are not like you, in case you haven't figured it out and don't realize how desperate the situation is for an older cat, let alone a black one.

It gets down to people not having been educated in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER about the reality of the desperate, desperate world of homeless cats (and dogs). They THINK they know, but they don't really understand what the chances are for an older cat to get adopted from a shelter.

I have no idea why black cats are over looked. They are just so beautiful. My eye wanders straight to the black cats first. My first cat was a tuxedo when I was about 7...

We adopted Kitty Katty when he was 6 years old and he has been nothing but a wonderful addition to our home. I have already posted in this thread so I am not going to go on and on...

Hey Queens!

Yes I know most people prefer kittens or other colored cats. I found most people adore my cat. Plus I found out that Jinx is actually 7 years old and not 4, so he is older than I initially thought.

Wow he is the same age as Kitty Katty, born in August 2005.
