Where I live in TN, PetsMart has the best prices on cat food, both canned and dry. I don't buy the cheap grocery store brands loaded with useless fillers. Often Wal*Mart is a few cents cheaper on litter. Why do you say "Ugh" about having a new cat?

Shop around. I buy my cat food online. When it's time to buy, I compare prices and free shipping promotions, and look for coupons at any number of on line pet food supply stores. Then with my calculator to hand, I figure out who has the best price.

Sometimes if I receive notification of a sale or promotion, if it is a good one, I purchase, even if it is not time.

Look for free shipping, but also consider that some places jack up the price, and the free shipping may be a worse deal than buying elsewhere and paying shipping. Consider if the store requires you to pay state sales tax, also. Often, signing up for "subscription" or "auto-ship" programs can save you some money, and those can be changed whenever you want them to be changed.

Stores I use:

petfooddirect.com
nationalpetpharmacy.com (affiliated with petfooddirect but often has better prices)
gulf-coast-pet-supplies.com
amazon.com (often amazon is a front for some of the stores listed above, but prices may be different going through amazon)
Heartypet.com
onlynaturalpet.com

Congratulations on your new family member, why do you say ugh? Cats make great housemates.

If the kitty has problems, we'll help you. What's her/his name?

i use the special kitty clumping from wlmart for litter...the one in the 40 (or 50lb) plastic tub...
its cheap but it seems to work well, i scoop once or twice a day and havent had any odor issues....

for food i use the diamond naturals cat food from the feed store for dry
and usually friskies (i know its not great but even junky wet food is better than an entirely dry diet...) so thats walmart too...ill get better wet food when i cna afford/when i have coupons usually from TSC.

I absolutely love Swheatscoop litter, but its not the cheapest. However, bought a huge litter box for my cat and it holds about a weeks worth of litter. I only have to scoop just before trash day. I never smell a thing.

I buy most everything from PetsMart, just because it's convenient. I haven't investigated Petco much; a new store opened nearby so I'll have to check it out.
