This cat's picture was all over Facebook just weeks ago with most people saying it had to have been photo shopped. Beautiful kitty. Watch her appearance this morning on Today.
This has to be one of the most beautiful domestic cats I've ever seen.
I agree the almost-straight line is kind of jarring at first. But then when you really look at her and appreciate how pretty she is ... What an amazing cat!
Edited to add...I was doing some reading into why/how this happens. With female tortie cats, they have XX chromosomes. In a skin cell the gene for either ginger or black fur may be activated on one or the other chromosome. This is why you don't get 'normal' male tortis...they only carry one X chromosome, so they can be ginger or black but not both. Skin cells grow in clusters, which is why you get the patches of black or ginger. Depending on when the gene for ginger or black is activated during fetal development, you either get distinct patches or a more brindle pattern. I think the straight split is because pigment carrying skin cells first develop along the neural crest of the fetus- the spine, in other words. So if one skin cell on one side activated for ginger and a skin cell on the other side activated for black, and then both cells reproduced you could end up with this pattern.
That's my understanding anyhow, but I'm by no possible means an expert on genetics or color patterns, so if anyone has better insight please share...it's quite interesting.

JJ some great pics. I love the black and white kitty. This new two faced kitty is the best example cause the line is exactly right down the center where the others are a little bit over half. Thanks for posting the pictures and the site.
