My 29-year-old Eureka, that I bought before owning cats, bit the dust and I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner.
I have two cats -- to whom I'm allergic -- three flights of stairs and both carpet and hard surface floors. Recommendations? What do you use? Which vacuum(s) do you find best sucks up the cat hair?
They are super expensive, but Dysons really are amazing with cat hair. I borrowed one from a friend, and am now looking to purchase one myself. I just don't know which one yet.
We have two kitties - they are short hairs but they shed a LOT.
I have a Riccar commercial upright (looks like the Riccar 8925 Premier Commercial Series Upright Vacuum but is an earlier one that cost about $600 at the time), and my mother has a Simplicity upright, which is similar design but a household model. Both are quite adequate. I also use a $30 6-gallon(?) ShopVac for sweeping up cat litter and other debris. If I remember, the Riccar I have, the dirt doesn't go through the fan. That's important if you are sweeping up grits like cat litter, because that will tear up a fan. Before the Riccar, I owned a Hoover $450 (bought in 1995) self-propelled sweeper that worked great, except you could no longer get parts for it and the brush roller was worn out and the fan had been knicked by debris and was noisy. I chose the Ricccar for its construction and simplicity.
You might look at Simplicity and Panasonic for affordability. Really, that $30 or $35 ShopVac from Lowes plus a $40 or $50 Bissel from Walmart would probably do ya, if you wanted really inexpensive. The ShopVac will get all the loose dirt, but you need a brush roller to get the hair. But a decent brush roller on a cheap vac will probably do that. I put a drywall bag in the ShopVac. It contains all dust. I rarely have to vac up any water, so I just set it up for optimum dust collection.

Was curious about some of these, just for some possible help for others looking: Simplicity and Riccar are made/owned by the same company. It's called Tacony: Tacony Corporation
This place put up a chart with comparison of Riccar and Simplicity models that are the same except for cosmetic differences. Can't vouch for if it is up to date: Simplicity Vacuum Cleaners Compare To Riccar
Have to say here in the closet at work we have a Kenmore a decade or so old that looks suspiciously like that Riccar still does! Hm....
I second the Dyson. It is the best vacuum I have ever owned and is dynamite on cat hair. They are expensive but you can buy a refurbished one for less money online. That is what I did and it is as good as a new one.
I Hate my Shark Navigator Lift Away Pro ... too late to return it ... but I may try an unorthodox approach to get a refund ... as soon as I come up with a plan
I have an Oreck (cheapest upright model) -- they are a serious vacuum. So serious there are NO attachments! LOL It came with a hand-held that has attachments (for cobwebs and corners). I do like it. We have a dog and cats -- not to mention some of my own hair!!
