I forgot to say that I have had one of those cheap pumps from Amazon.om running continuously for over a year, maybe even almost 1.5 years, and it's still going strong. I also take the pump apart periodically and clean it out with a pipe cleaner. Every time I refill the fountain, I backflush the pump, too. Don't forget to pull out the impeller and de-slime it.

Jasper has one. A big white porcelain one, with fresh water added on a routine basis. No need to change filters. No plugs needed.
