We had a boatful of cats, no problems at all. Then family moved into a separate part of the house with 2 of ther own cats - and our cats started spraying (male and female, all fixed).

The problem stopped when the other cats moved out. We had to replace all the carpeted areas, some of the flooring beneath the carpet, and some of the wall board. Home Depot absolutely loved us - CHA-CHING.

We have since more cats and have had no problems. S0 -you just never know!!!

Anyway - lovely cats. I think you will get some great responses to the ad. Our last adoption was of two bonded kittens. Best adoption we ever made!! In the future, we will always adopt in pairs.

I would never give up my kitties either, spraying or peeing or not. We had one dog who also refused to ever be house trained, no matter what we tried. We kept her until she died of cancer at age 12 and just cleaned a LOT. One of my guys started peeing onto the cat beds when we had the fosters, but no big deal, I just threw them in the washer with oxyclean, detergent and washed them in hot water. He has stopped peeing since they left. Once the kittens start coming into the shelter, I will start fostering those to socialize the shy ones, we will see if he does it again.

I would not hesitate to give a cat to a home without an adoption fee, IF I knew the person or it was a friend of a friend. BUT the rescue I mentioned gave animals for free to people they knew only from FB, big mistake. They post photos and people see the cute little kitten or puppy and say they want it. The animal is then delivered to them free of charge, not even charged transport costs... and often they change their minds. They even had one adopter who then basically blackmailed the group by saying she was going to be homeless and needed funds to secure an apartment so she could keep the dog. They ended up giving her money and found out in the end that she was a drug user... so much craziness... you would not believe it.

Your vet sounds wonderful, too bad I am not closer to you.. otherwise I would ask you for his name.

From a personal perspective I hate putting ads on CL for animals. Too many of them end up on bad situations. Bait dogs, target practice, animal labs. You only assume the people who "adopt" them have good intentions.

Thought so, too. But then, two rescuers I trust told me that they have gotten some great homes via CL. Before that, I would have nixed the idea.

I don't expect to find a home this way, however, because one experienced rescuer said you are more likely to find homes via networking with people you know.

I am truly surprised at how that rescue handles it - I agree, they are bending over backwards too much.

But the real issue, to me, is the screening process. This is everything.

You went through a lot! We used to have this gorgeous wall to wall emerald green wool carpet in the LR (can you imagine?) and the dog peed on it nice and yellow. Within a couple of years we took it up and had the wood floors done over in polyurethane. To be perfectly honest, I wish so much we could decorate like "normal" people do, but it's not possible.

You are SO lucky your cats reverted back to not spraying. I would give the world, just about, not to have (get this) up to 5 cats spraying or urinating outside of the box. Only one does it daily - the others, once in a while.

I will never forget what the DVM behaviorist told me, though: She said, in the end, having many cats in a closed territory (my house is normal size, not tiny, though) is "unnatural" from the science of cat behavior point of view: They can run out of a territory outside, and they are captive in your house.

One cat sprays the windows more now since we have a new more or less permanent resident homeless cat on our property now, Brownie. Brownie is always outside the windows walking around or using a shelter, or eating there.
