Right now my cats are accustomed to their litter boxes, food and water in the basement. But as they get older, I absolutely will place litter boxes on every floor of the house.

That's a mess I'll do anything to prevent! LOL

Yes, as I said in my (very long ) post, if there are special circumstances I set up a litter box in my bathroom. When I have done that, none of the healthy cats ever use it, they continue to go downstairs. My apartment is tiny, even with the downstairs utility area. It is set up and arranged to the cats' specifications and convenience, above and beyond mine, in all ways. Every breath I take, what is best for them is foremost on my mind.

Yeah I think the key thing is being the perceptive cat guardian that pays attention to what the cat(s) seem to need and want. They've got ways of letting us know these things, if we pay attention.
