Lost & found listings on Craigslist are fine, and no doubt a good way to get a pet back where it's supposed to be. But that's not what OP was talking about. If everyone who is listing a pet on CL for sale or free or whatever would thoroughly check out who they're giving the animal to, and make sure it's the right home for them.... then all well and good. But you can bet that is not happening in every case. Craigslist, and sites like it on the net, are a convenient way to connect with a very large number of people.... which also raises the odds of connecting with the wrong people.

I have contacted FOUR different rescues about helping me rehome one of my three Dachshunds. NONE of them will respond to my requests for help. I have to rehome her because she fights (viciously) with the other two, to the point that I have blood splattered on the walls - no kidding. I don't know what to do at this point, and I am afraid to use Craigslist.

Getting a pet from there is one thing.... going the "other way" of putting them on there for FREE just encourages the lunatic fringe to pick up a load of free animals and do as they will with them. And it's happening all over the country.

I too would like to see pet selling on CL & any other internet venue go away. I can imagine that it could be another outlet for puppy mill/backyard breeders, if it isn't already.
Oh it is! BYBs advertise there. I'm sure puppy mills do also, when they can slip by the volunteer watchdogs. Through emails I got to communicate with a few people who act as Mods and remove their posts as soon as they show up. But then I'm sure those puppy mill and BYB people will find anther site to sell their wares on. There are also flippers there who will adopt a pruebred for free and in a few days they're trying to sell it on CGs for like, a $75 "donation" or re-homing fee. If you want a good home for a pet you have to be so careful as to where they go. Even then.... yeah, even then.....

Well, if you'd have had your wish and Craigslist had no pet section, then poor Max and Chloe may never have found a home.

The bottom line is that there are sickos and creeps everywhere, but they are in no way the vast majority of the people who roam this planet, let alone the people who get a household pet from Craigslist. Try to have maintain some perspective.

I hate the misuse of CL for the reasons listed (that are so repulsive that I cannot even mention them) but I got my Merlin the wonderful Pomeranian on CL. We went to all the rescue shelters but they wanted hundreds of $$$ plus they said we didn't have a yard so we couldn't have a dog.

We had Merlin until he died at age 14 and his former owner used to come and visit him and she always said she was so grateful to us for giving him such a good home.

Merlin passed away one year ago and we got another Pom on CL. There were strict stipulations and I provided a reference from Merlin's former owner. We paid $300 and signed papers promising to take good care of him. Now we've had our Pogo for one year--he is not Merlin, he is his own doggie but he is one of the family.

I know CL is also used the wrong way. There are warnings on ours to not give animals away for free and to be careful who gets them. There are also pet stores that sell animals and they are not from reputable breeders but from pet mills. Somewhere in between is the truth, the best way to unite a loving animal with a loving family.

But for every Max and Chloe, how many others are being adopted for target practice, Pit bull bait, to be sold to laboratories, to thrill-killers as seen on FB and YouTube etc?

I'm trying.... but neither your or I know how many psychopaths are adopting free cats and dogs that end up suffering a most miserable, horrible death. Aside from those who torture and kill the cats and dogs, where do you think the dealers who sell to Labs are getting all their cats and dogs from? Most pounds have stopped supplying Labs due to public censure. One well dressed couple with a well behaved child can "adopt" hundreds of dollars worth of cats and dogs from people on CL to sell to Labs for experiments. Since they look "good" the person hands over their pet never dreaming what will soon happen to it. I was told these "flippers" do not look like trash and don't pull up in a filthy old truck full of screaming cats and wailing dogs. The Labs also prefer these once loved pets over strays as they're usually healthier and better behaved. Where I live here in TN, before CL became all the rage, there were "sweeps" where the dealers would ride through neighborhoods and half the cats and dogs were never seen again. Dogs would even vanish from their fenced yards and their chains.

The same could be said for the escort services CL removed after a few women were murdered. There are sickos everywhere.... but now they are no longer preying on women from CGs.

Fine animals can be found on CG. This is true. The problem is there are too many psychos, flippers, sociopaths and other undesirables adopting these free or dirt cheap pets. Ask yourself how many innocent loving puppies and kittens, grown dogs and cats have to die to train one pit bull for the ring... and where are these dirtbags getting these kitties and dogs from. You can be sure they are not paying the shelters for them. The Shelters would also get suspicious when they kept coming back for more and more animals. CL has an endless supply for them. If your stomach and soul can take it, there are sites online showing what cats and dogs look like after a pit bull worked them over. They can't even scream in agony since their mouths are duct-taped shut. These psychos post these pictures and videos online no less. Those trying to stop this horror will produce an image or two to prove what they're saying. I looked one time... that was all I could handle.

The best way is probably charging for them and not giving them away. We never regretted paying for 3 of our cats. The girls came to $103 each completely vetted. Zeb' from Petco was $65 vetted. Callie was free as she was found in a parking lot. We both love her as much as if we'd paid $1,000 for her.
