I had a list of links I cannot find concerning what goes on with Craigslist pet section. There has been a lot of information about what's happening to so many of the FREE and dirt cheap pets passing through CL. People just gladly hand over pets to total strangers without asking any questions or checking Veterinary references. Most of the cats and dogs that don't get all these mostly non-existant "good homes only" end up bait for young pit bulls, snake food, are sold by the lb to labs for experiments, some of them painfull and horrible in themselves. I could go on and on.... but to use them for target practice shocked me! This has to be a new one. What gets me about this case is the person who reported what they saw didn't bother to get lic plate numbers or good descriptions of the gun-happy sociopaths involved.

Don't miss the information at the bottom concerning Austin Patterson of TX.

Some of us also love dogs. Anyone can Google and come up with more horrific stuff to read than they can handle. I wonder if CL can somehow be stopped from having the pet section. After a few murders as I understand it, they got rid of the "Escort Services."

Oh makes me so mad. Sad thing CL will never stop these ads for pet sells.

A better approach might be to try and educate the public about the dangers of using Craigslist to dispose of unwanted pets, though I don't know how one would accomplish that. That's assuming of course that the people posting on CL actually care about what happens to the animals, which I'm sure in many cases doesn't apply. I too would like to see pet selling on CL & any other internet venue go away. I can imagine that it could be another outlet for puppy mill/backyard breeders, if it isn't already.

Another case of irresponsible people finding a way to make a quick buck. I agree, education is the key, no market no profit. I see similar abuse at work with adults and children - people take advantage of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Parents, families and caretakers have people hospitalized for questionable reasons (I work in psych) then refuse to pick them up when they're discharged (which is abandonment and legally actionable) until we threaten them. I don't think we benefit the patient by doing that but we have no choice, we can't keep the patient after we've provided all the care necessary.

My point is some people will behave badly and it is up to those who care to make a difference when possible. Educate, check references, and purchase only from reputable sources.

There are many people in this world who have pets and after they get one, they realize they cannot take care of the animal for financial reasons or other reasons, so they abandon it or sell it to some unknown person out of desperation.

I agree there are problems and abuses but in my area it is the first go to place for a lost pet. I found a dog last week without any tags, the first thing I did was pull up my local craigslist and there he was, he had escaped during a thunderstorm.

Those stories are indeed distressing. It's particularly horrifying when shelter animals (who, for the most part, used to be pets) are abused or picked up for use in the medical field. I, too, believe that "Free to a good home" merely invites abusers.

Let's not use this, though, as yet another occasion to smear those of us who happen to be gun owners by using terms such as "gun-happy." That hardly describes most of the torture of animals in this country. Newsflash: Owning guns and having pets are not mutually exclusive.

i got my wonderful dog off Craigslist - there was a rehoming free, which the people waived after we met. It was just there to eliminate a certain element. I still immediately go him scanned for microchip & continued to check Craigslist for missing Golden Retrievers.

Great story! I forgot but when my cat escaped I put his pic on CL as well as notifying animal control. CL isn't evil, just some people.
