I've know several men, my brother included, who love cats. I had a roommate who decided to take the room BECAUSE I had cats. He liked my dog but it was my cats that sealed the deal. He was active in a group that t/s/r feral/abandoned cats on I-95 and fed them as well. BEST roommate ever, really a great guy.
That seems to be the case across the board, animal lovers tend to be really nice, kind people. The local animal rescue group is made of of some of the hardest working, nicest people on this planet. They unselfishly give their time and money to make feral cats have a little better life than they have, and if they can get them a good home they work hard to make that happen.
I think if every kid was brought up to respect and love animals this would be a better world.
I believe you're right Don, we know that people who are cruel to animals are also cruel to humans. We ask that question as part of our assessment at work. Animal lovers are always horrified.
I can't imagine a child growing up without pets, especially cats. it teaches responsibility, empathy, love and ,to a great degree, biology. When I was single I simply was not at all interested in a man who didn't like cats.
Funny though, I grew up without cats and I think that's partly why I'm that much more drawn to them now. I mean, I certainly experienced a few cats, neighbors' cats or whatever, but we couldn't have one in the house at the time because my mother was allergic. I did have a few things, had a small fish tank for a while, had a parakeet for a few years. Never a mammal. We went down the path of having a dog when I was a teenager but it didn't make sense, he still wasn't coming inside mostly. So we gave him to the neighbor instead who gave him a better home.
When I finally did get a cat I wasn't planning on it. I was staying for a couple weeks at a friend/colleague's house, and he had stupidly let his cat go unspayed and she got out and ended up with 3 kittens. They were the right age by the time I left and I went home with one.
Over the years I've become more and more drawn to cats.
When I met and began dating a very nice lady in the mid 80's, I did not have any pets. I liked animals, but just never considered having a pet as I was single and didn't have much of a 'home life'. This lady soon invited me to her home for dinner, where I met her 2 cats. One was especially friendly and was in my lap in a manner of minutes. His name was Mikey & I was quite taken with him. I recall that evening as the exact point in time that my love affair with cats began. She would tell me later that she had invited me for dinner to specifically meet her cats, and to see how I got along with them & how they got along with me. She believed that if her cats had a problem with me, then she probably would too, and the relationship would go no further. She was dead serious about it. It was a test and I must have passed, because we had 16 happy years of marriage together & a houseful of cats & dogs.
How could you not love a beautiful little animal like that one ? So cute.
Today was bedroom cleaning day and I opened my door while I was doing it and let all three of ours in. Normally, my bedroom is off limits to keep it hair free, but today I gave them a treat. It was really funny to see them cautiously exploring every nook and cranny in the room and closet. They had a blast.
To get them out I just shook their treat bag and they came running, then I shut the door.
