I'm sorry this happened and I hope your cat returns. I sure wouldn't let them roam outside; most cats are perfectly happy inside if they're well treated, loved frequently, and have nice things. It's just too dangerous outside.
Really sorry about your cat. I know how you feel. Tonight both of my male cats are missing. These are outside farm cats but they are my buddies. Unfortunately, if they are out "tom-catting" in this neighborhood they may not make it back. My only neighbor is 3/4 of a mile down the road and the rest is cotton fields and open short-grass prairie. My fear is from the many coyotes we have. I have already lost several dogs to these guys.
I'm hoping they will show up in a day or so but I've been through this before.
Both of my cats are indoor/outdoor cats in the summer and winter if they don't mind the white stuff on their paws. In her earlier years, one of my cats (a spayed female) would stay out all night even in the rain! 4:30 or so in the morning is the latest she stayed out. I was pissed that she came home so late!
They are much older now, I become concerned when they don't return after a couple of hours. They are forest savvy and hopefully they will keep their wits about them - dogs, cats, lynx and foxes are out there so they need to be vigilant.
Yesterday and searched around the area for him but no sign.
This is what worked for me when my cat went missing. Hand out flyers in all the surrounding areas, not just my neighborhood. That meant going across the busy street where I knew he couldn't have gone. Then I went out at night (about 2 am) and called to the cat over and over again. First in my neighborhood, then walking farther and farther away. I left some of his cat food on each corner to create a smell.
He came back after 3 days. After talking to one of my neighbors one street over, I believe he was locked in their basement. I believe they saw my flyer and opened a door. They told me that my cat used to go visit their cat.
If people say, there is no way he could be locked in my storage unit, don't believe them. Ask to look.
I assume you have already called all the shelters in your area? It is certainly possible that you get your cat back, but you have to be aggressive and not give up.
The thing is that the jump to ground level is a bit of a way for a small animal like my cat so I doubt that he went over the balcany. I personally think that a neighbour stole him.
