One of my much loved Maine Coon boys insists on sharpening his claws on my carpet, pulling up the looped threads in my upstairs wall to wall carpeting. His nails are clipped monthly and there are multiple cat scratching apparatuses around (his brother uses the scratching posts all the time) the house.

Any ideas on what we can do to prevent or stop this behavior?

I've found Sticky Paws (if you have a Target near you, they sell their brand on a roll for less money) to be helpful for all fabric surfaces. Place a scratching post right near the area he tries to scratch, so he has an appropriate outlet. Use catnip to entice him to the post.

What kind of scratchers do you have? Cats have difference preferences. Some like cardboard, others sisal rope, etc. Some are horizontal scratchers and others prefer vertical posts. You may need to try a new type of scratcher. I have found the round cardboard ones (like that come with the Turbo Scratcher) are irresistable to many cats. They are inexpensive to try too.

Thanks for the suggestions. There isn't just one spot, it's all over the upstairs wall to wall carpeting in two rooms, a hallway and stairs (and sometimes the rug in the LR), so I don't know where I'd put Sticky Paws.

I have carpeted scratching posts, sisal ones, and the round carboard ones. He doesn't respond much to catnip, just an initial reaction that disappears. I'm really at my wits' end.
