What kind do yor use? I have been told several times, not to use the Clumping kind with Maine Coons, it sticks in the paws and can get ingested. Any kind of litter gets stuck in those darn snowshoe moose feet! My 2 have become very picky about their litters. When I moved to NC and into an apartment, I tried to change them to the Pine Pellets...they looked at me like I'd lost my ever-loving mind. Where's the clay??? so I still put some of the pellets in the bottom and clay - Fresh Step on top.
I am very anal about the box, I know they wish I'd go away so they can "flush" on their own, but if I hear them in there I go in to check. I live in a small apartment and am paranoid about the cat box smell. I have asked friends to warn me, and they say they don't smell anything...but I had a friend in Atlanta that had 18 cats and 6 dogs in a 900 square foot house. litter pans everywhere and she couldn't handle them. everything smelled of cat pee and I don't want that to happen. I know if you live with the smell you can't smell it.
I also wanted to mention I use the Litter Locker and it's great. Takes about 3 weeks to use the cartridge, of course 2 cats, 1 box. I'm not having to trek downstairs with baggies of cat poo!
fresh step clumbing with blue crystals. Though, the scent makes all of us,cats in cluded, sneeze. I like it, but I want to find one that not so strong of a scent. They recently made the same type without the scent and I LOVED it, but I can't find it again. does anyone remember this?
Arm & Hammer is the only one I found that truly keeps it odor-free! When I was travelling around w/job assignments, I'd take my cat with me and trust me, in a small area such as a hotel suite that's closed up, you can smell everything in short order! That's when I found out that this was the only litter to use.
I used to use clumping or "rock" litter, and just couldn't stand that awful smell... switched to litter pearls a few years back, and haven't experienced the stench since. All you have to do is scoop & flush the solids once a day, and do a complete litter change 1-2x a month (supposedly once for one cat, twice for two cats, etc.). The urine is absorbed by the silicone, though it does start to collect at the bottom after a couple of weeks - always use a pan-liner with it! Anyway, that's my preference, and they should give me a commission for this publicity.
We have six cats and use regular clay clumping litter and don't have any odor problems.
Of course it could be that we have gotten used to it and our house might really stink.
But so what. Our house is for us and the cats and they have never complained about the smell either.
Hey, if it doesn't bother you or the kitties, more power to you! My cats like the crystal litter (as far as I can tell - they haven't protested or anything), so it works well for our household. I have allergies to lots of things, so I'm probably more sensitive to the smell of clumping litter... maybe it has a specific ingredient I'm really allergic to?
It's usually the fragrence chemicals, in my opinion. Hence my sneezing when I clean the litterbox.
Did you know they tell pregnant women to stay away from cats and litterboxes while pregnant???? What theory does this come from????
