Personally, I use a 50/50 mix of distilled and bottled water, both for the cats and in my coffee. I mix the two partly because of the price of distilled water, but mostly for taste. With cats, it's important to keep water consumption high for better health.

Drinking only distilled water can ultimately cause deficiencies in sodium, potassium, and important trace minerals. It also becomes acidic when exposed to air. It may contain higher levels of volatile compounds such as benzenes, trihalomethanes, and trichloroethylene, as well as highly toxic “disinfection by-products.” In people, exclusive consumption of distilled water is associated with high blood pressure and heart arrhythmias. While distilled water can be valuable when used for a short-term process of detoxification, it’s not safe for long-term consumption.

I would not make a decision based on that article, it makes many unsubstantiated claims, and the statement "
In people, exclusive consumption of distilled water is associated with high blood pressure and heart arrhythmias" is simply false. There are no peer-reviewed medical studies showing negative impacts to human health from drinking distilled water in combination with an appropriate diet. In the US Navy, sailors drink only distilled water for months at a time, with no ill effects. Similarly, the US Army primarily uses reverse-osmosis water with low TDS, as do astronauts.
Many vets recommend distilled water for cats who are prone to stones. If your vet recommends distilled water, follow their recommendation.
