Wow, this thread really did make me sad ! While we appreciate your honesty, it is hard to think that anyone who has had these two pets for so long would even THINK of getting rid of them. Pets are not disposable toys, we take on their friendship in good times and bad times, and we NEVER let them down !
Please reconsider and know that you will feel so much better if you just give them the lives they deserve until that final, sad moment comes when you must make the terrible decision all of us have to make at some point.
You will feel so much better if you do, believe me.
I hope people get more attached and connected with a pet they have had for a long time. No pet should be put in a shelter just because a owner "no longer wanted them", after all these years together.
But what do I know? And no I have dog since 2010, and I am more in love with it then I was before.
Shame on You OP ..... shame for shame . I think you must be missing a gene the rest of us have or an organ the rest of us have called a heart . I pray you never have any children that throw you in a nursing home because they no longer want to care for you .Man this burns me up .....
Please stick it out and take proper care of them until they pass away. Cats that old won't adjust well to a new home and also won't last five minutes in a high kill shelter.
I can see what the OP is saying but at the same time one thing I have learned over the years is that sometimes the choices you made years ago limit the choices you have available today. I do wonder if the OP has maybe found a person that doesn't want the cats around since some people don't like cats which I understand BUT some people don't want any competition either from beloved pets whom they become jealous of and if that is the case "me or your pets", chose wisely, chose the pets! People like that are trouble down the road and you'll be wishing it was the cats in the bed next to you.
What makes me most sad is the people on here offering nothing but rebukes. I still don't see where the OP is actually doing some awful thing or indicates any intention of doing so, just expressing a feeling that is taboo on the surface but deep down is familiar to many people in many similar situations (not just with pets).
And goyguy of all people, those remarks at the end, totally not called for. Crosses a line into being at least inappropriate if not outright sexist, although I guess it can't be latter since OP is apparently a man....
There isn't any reason you can't have people in your life and take responsibility for your cats too. Cats have emotions just like people. They are attached to you and each other and their home. As another poster said, when they die, don't have pets. But you owe these two a comfortable senior life.
I pray this is a wind up.
I'm thinking now that this is the case....notice that OP is nowhere to be seen now, on this thread...
I don't understand why can't you just drop them off at a shelter. I would never lose sleep over, or have my comfort level due to some cat. Don't forget it's your life, not the cat's,... live your life happily, if the cat is not bringing you happiness get rid of it, you don't owe any explanation to anyone, nor do you owe anything to that cat.
I hope you never have children with that attitude, Leyla ! My God!!!!!
