At the end of our bed we have a chair with a really soft blanket folded on it and on top of that a really soft throw. Our cat, a huge spoiled, loved baby, sleeps there, and periodically takes the throw in his mouth and sort of purrs and claws.
Is this normal? Is there something we're not providing him?

With cats, pretty much everything is normal. Their specialty is weird (or, as some of us call it - charming!).

Who knows if it is normal for any other cat but it is normal for your cat.
Cats are just cats and there is no rhyme, reason or logical explaination for what they do.

I think it is okay.. It has to do with how early they are weaned, I believe. I never minded the cute "kneading", having one who did this well into adulthood, up against me sometimes, purring with his eyes closed. Just watch that your kitty does not chew and eat fabric, which the one I have now, does. Early on, I caught on to her pulling yarn out of a rug, chewing on clothing...ai yi yi. I had to remove things and have learned to keep likely items out of her reach. This has to do with boredom, though I play with her and she plays independently. Mostly, it would be bad to have them ingest too much of anything like this.
No, he's not ingesting the fabric, or even damaging it.
You have a beautiful cat. My wife & I had a Cow Kitty many years ago, and he was a total love-bug. Still miss him dearly.
I'm trying to remember what this color pattern is called... are they known as Harlequins or something like that?

My vet calls him "black and white." Total love bug, indeed. He is a little person, sweet as any I've ever seen. And loyal, kindly, patient with the fosters. Keeps me to my schedule. He's my boy!!!!
