Hello. My Cornish Rex cat is 9. He has had heart disease since age 3. Tex is on oral meds. He is getting worse. The Cardiologist said he needs to get injections so he will not get a blood clot. After doing research I do not feel comfortable but want to do what is best for him. Anyone else have a cat that has Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy? I am so sad and worried. Thank You for taking time to read my post.

I have had several sphynx cats with HCM. One has had and survived a clot to the hind legs. It is an extremely painful and life threatening condition for the cat. We were unaware of his heart condition prior to the clot. If you are able to do the injections, it's really not that bad and can reduce the chance of a clot. At this point I'd do a lot to prevent this terrible condition from happening again. I use lovenox 3x a day with a very fine insulin needle and the cat doesn't even notice. One still also has to manage the heart failure itself, but I am more scared of another clot that the slower congestive heart failure. Unforunately lovenox is expensive (around $160 a month for 3x a day from a Canadian pharmacy) but after $5000 in bills to get him through the clot, it seems worth it.

Hi Pgwalker73,

I started my cat Tex on injections last week. He was getting them 2x a day for 5 days and now it's 1x day. Hopefully this will break up the clot that he has. He takes a total of 4 meds plus the injection. He is so tried. It all happened so fast. Some days he is a little active and other days he isn't. The amount I have will last till the end of October to the beginning of November. His Cardiologist told me he has 6 months to 1.5 years. I am concerned about his quality of life. I will have to decide if I want to continue before I order more. How are your cats doing? Are you still giving injections? Any side effects? Thank You.
