Thanks for all the input guys! We are going to try and ignore him for the time being and see if that works, if it doesnt take after a week we may just say screw it and leave the door open. They just get so noisy at night sometimes. Our two cats play a lot at night, and we live in an old house with hardwood floors, so we hear everything and nothing is muffled (and ear plugs dont help too much). But they will come running into our room at night sometimes and just tackle each other and make a ridiculous amount of work in the process. It's almost like they are showing off (it's quite funny). We have dealt with this in the past, but our sleep schedule is kind of out of whack since we have a baby now (she still wakes multiple times at night). So listening to our cats in our room is the last thing we want after waking up to a crying baby
But we will try the ignoring method and then go from there. I have a feeling we may just start leaving the door open again.... But, Thanks again!
Something that worked for a friend when her cat was waking her up at 5 every morning is to shift their feeding times so that you're feeding the cats right before you go to bed.

In my house their last meal is right before bed. That never stops mine from reminding me about an hour before I get up that breakfast time is coming soon, though, so I had better think about getting up soon.
Yeah we actually tried the ignoring method, but he would cry at the door for a half hour or more before he stopped. So at that point he has woken us up for good.
What's worse, being dragged out of bed every morning, or just letting the cats have what they had and were used to?
It's probably confusing them as well, because you changed up the game. Cats are creatures of habit, and changes are quite a challenge - for them and you.

...you may as well start practicing your "screwits" now and get it over with :P

Yep, that's been my go-to solution for years..... and it's cheaper than taking medication.
A perfect example of cats training humans to appropriate behavior (according to cats). Might as well submit or they will just come up with another training method, probably more offensive.
