My cat Flea Taxi had ear mites six weeks ago and the vet gave him a "one time treatment" that was supposed to get rid of the mites. Now he is scratching again and showing signs of ear mites again. He has a twin brother (Chairman Meow) that is also showing signs of ear irritation. I treated CM the same day FT was treated at the vet with the same medication.
FT had ear mites a couple of years ago and they gave me a treatment that was used over the course of a week or two and the mites cleared up. This time with the "new and improved" version they didn't.
I am going back today and getting the old version of treatment. My question is this; are they any tips to getting rid of ear mites completely? Do I need to spray down the house with something? Is there some sort of other treatment they need to control the mites? I heard that the "Revolution" flea treatment also controls mites. I have been using a "knockoff version" of Frontline (sentry fripoguard) - does this not kill mites?
I would put the cats on Revolution for cats. But get them diagnosed first. There are other ear problems, yeast, and bacterial infections, that may need treatment.
I second the Revolution suggestion. It's the only topical I know of that's supposed to control ear mites. I've not had to deal with ear mites with my cats, so I can't say how effective Revolution is for that. But it has definitely controlled the fleas for the past 2 years. It's a good product in my experience.
Since you have dogs in and out of the house, the cats need to be on a schedule of pest preventive as well.....even though they are indoor.
When I rescued Charcoal from the streets he was dosed at the vets for his earmites.........2-1/2 years later... never another issue as there are no indoor/outdoor critters in the house - well except for me -
All 4 cats are indoor only. And two have never experienced the outdoors at all!
My second-to-newest adoptee from the shelter, Princess the Heifer Cat (she's Big!), had a really stubborn and recurring problem with ear mites. The vet had her on drops for her ears, but the only thing that finally cured her was putting her on Revolution for flea control and ear mites as well. Worked like a charm!
This one below I particularly like because it goes onto environment treatments that will discourage re-transmission of fleas/mites ..which it appears you cat has encountered..after treatment by the onetime vet prescription....Good luck BTW
I'll go with the Revolution for a permanent cure. If it's still mites bothering him.
