Is it normal for cat breeders to keep their cats in cages? Or should they keep them in their homes living among their human family?
I went to a cat breeder and there were like 30 cats, all in individual cages, like in a kennel for dogs. The kittens were in the same cage with their mothers.
When you buy a kitten, do you consider this?
If you are interested in a specific breed, I urge you to contact a breed rescue group or search Petfinder. Even local shelters have breeds of cats and dogs and you can fill out an application and have them contact you when one comes in.
Really?
So breeders supposed to raise them in their homes?
While I was growing up in Eastern Europe, we and other purebred cat owners raised one litter at a time in our own homes and socialized all the kittens by our family. Other than that everyone owned just one adult cat. It was normal there and then, but I'm not sure what to expect in 2018 in America.
That's not a responsible breeder, that's a kitty mill. Sadly, many breeders like that exist for both cats and dogs.
If you are looking for a breed reach out to rescue groups for that specific breed and shelters. We always wanted a weim (dog) and we were able to get one from a rescues group that was dedicated to weims.
I have never bought a cat, they have all been rescues or walk ins. But I would not buy from someone who kept them in cages. What you describe from your childhood sounds more appropriate.
The larger cats are in cages like 5ftx3ftx4ft. The kittens are with their mother in a large cage sized about 8ftx4ftx8ft. All have cat trees and litter boxes in them, the bottom floor is wood or linoleum. these are otherwise expensive purebred cats. Shelters dont have them. If I think about it, the price was about 30-50% cheaper than most other breeders.
I wonder how professional breeders keep their cats. Those who sell kittens several times a year. What I saw while growing up were not really breeders. We were not breeders, its just it was part of the cat owners life to have a mating meetup once a year, and the female cat owners to have kittens once a year or two.
According to the OP's other thread, probably Bengals.
