That's what makes me think he was taken in by a family. They probably figured he was either a stray or a storm refugee, and for whatever reason decided not to try to find out about his history. Don't forget, 14 years ago microchips weren't quite as common in peoples minds as they are today. If he had been found by a rescue/shelter he would have been scanned and returned, most likely. Another interesting question is how did he end up out on his own a second time?

There was one in the news here in NYC a few years back. Someone brought a cat to a shelter and it turned out to have a chip. They called the number, which was out in Colorado. The family was shocked--they'd moved to a new house eight years earlier and the cat took off. They assumed it was dead.

No one has any idea how the cat came to be wandering the streets of Manhattan eight years later, but the family flew to the city and took their cat back. He seemed to remember them.

Stories like that are good, and sort of sad at the same time. Sad in that the original family lost all those years with their cat. But I guess it's better than never seeing the cat again at all. And one thing to remember about microchips, they only help if the cat's information is kept up to date. Unfortunately, many folks fail to do that.

Another story with a happy ending
