I finally found a perfect rug for my foyer. It matches my décor perfectly, and especially matches a picture in the entrance way.
Well, our three cats appear to "love" it also. They have been using it as a potty Its a 5'x8' rug, made of propylene, cost $99, so not a major investment, but I LIKE it! Its an intricate pattern, browns and greens. I didn't notice the "re-purposing" the cats did until I went to move it today, at least 30--40 kitty turds rolled off. They blended in with the pattern and I didn't notice them until today. I can't distinguish if they actually urinated there, also, but when they do #2, usually #1 comes out, too
We took up the rug and its currently outside, airing out on the patio. Question---what--if anything---can we do to keep the cats from doing so again? We have three cats, two male, one female, both 10+ years old.
I can't tell which cat is doing it, but it looks like its all per the same cat. Any ideas how to treat the rug so the cat(s) won't make a repeat action? The rest of our house is ceramic and wood, and they don't go there.
Probably I will set my rug out with heavy trash next week----cats usually win
Steam clean it. Then spray with Simple Green. What puzzles me is how you didn't smell it before 30 to 40 kitty mistakes rolled off? No judgement, just wondering how you didn't smell that?
Urine is hard to remove. But I am training a new puppy, and the Simple Green does seem to get rid of the odor.
My floors are stone, so no odor can really soak in. But I build rugs and that's what I'd suggest for that type of rug.
He is not using the same spot, and is about 95% trained. So hope it helps with your kitties Mary.

Thanks for the advice! The poo poos are rather hard and dry, so maybe that's why they didn't smell? Also, the rug is is the front foyer, we usually come in and out the garage door. Is Simple Green a rug cleaner, or specific deodorant? Where can I buy it? Thanks!
Threestep, this is a different Simple Green than the one I've seen sold at Lowes. Not saying they don't carry the special one I've linked where you are, but not available where I'm at, except at Pet Shops and Amazon.
The best deodorizer and cleaner I've ever used is "Odo-Ban". You can buy it at Lowe's, HDepot etc. and comes in either a decent size spray bottle, or a gallon jug. (Mine never defecated on anything in the house, but I have used it in the laundry room where, as she got older, would not get totally into the litter box -- and she would hang over the back edge.) I used the puppy pads under that back edge, but being crazy clean, I also washed that part of the laundry room floor with the Odo-Ban. The scent is subtle and very nice.

Congratulations! You have discovered an already solid cat litter than can be conveniently rolled up and disposed of... and no scooping required. A bit pricey though.
Forgive my poor attempt at humor OP. I am sorry your new rug didn't work out. Would be interesting to know why they did that.

At least I didn't buy the $600 rug I liked
