If there were such a thing as the Nap Olympics, there’s no doubt that a cat would emerge victorious. On average, felines sleep for 15 hours a day, and some can snooze for as much as 20 hours in a single 24-hour period. The only question is: Why do cats sleep so much?
My cat always gets in bed with me when I go to sleep. He has his one very particular spot, alongside my right leg, sort of half on and half off it, or leaning against it. He will prod around in the blankets until he's worked out just where I am positioned, and then arrange himself accordingly. I know he gets up in the night to go do cat things. But no matter how much he's napped during the day, and even if he isn't very tired, he at least makes a point of laying with me when I first go to bed.
Lately though, every morning, after I make my coffee and do a couple of minor housekeeping tasks, I always want to have my coffee at my computer desk and update my financial records (accounting nerd that I am) and I've been finding him curled up in my chair just when I want to sit in it. I have to move him every morning. Now, I do not believe that cats are especially perverse little animals, unlike some people, and my cat is especially sweet in my opinion. So I wonder about the logic of his claiming the chair at that time. He otherwise doesn't have a lot of interest in it. Is he warming it for me? Hoping I will find a way to share the chair with him and do some snuggles? Has he, upon noting my routine and seeing that I always like to sit there at that time each day, decided to see for himself what's so special about that chair anyways? Is he trying to build rapport by sharing in the Morning Chair Ritual with me? I always wonder what he's thinking...
^^ Our kitties must be related. BeBe does the same things at night, especially the snuggling up to the leg/thigh and 'feeling' around for just the right spot. I've put the down comforter on for the winter, and she is totally loving that. She is only a cuddle bug at night though, and purrs for about the first 4 or 5 minutes once she is settled.
As for the computer etc., she was also doing the similar chair thing once I go to the computer where I have my coffee and get online. So I bought her a nice round cushy kitty bed, and put it near an inside wall with one treat in it, and she can see what's going on. (Not what I'm typing though …. )
In other words, she has me well trained.
