There are better processed canned foods than Fancy Feast, but none of them are dry. There is nothing beneficial about feeding kibble to a cat.

You’ll figure it out as you and your cat get to know each other. You can start by feeding him maybe half a small can (about an ounce and a half) of wet food once in the morning and again in the evening. If your little pal gobbles it all up, feed him a little more. If he leaves his food, maybe try a little less.

It’s been my observation that cats fall into one of two types of eaters. One type is the cat that loves his food. He comes running when it’s mealtime, and he gets a little hyped up when it’s time to eat and he hasn’t been fed. He tends to gobble his food down. With this type of cat the food bowl is pretty much empty all the time, except when you are actually feeding him.

The other type is what my wife and I call the “grazer”. The grazer isn’t interested in food. He doesn’t come at mealtime; when he does come he sniffs the food and then sits in front of you as if to say, “...surely this can’t be my dinner, surely you have other treats for me.” But if you open a second can (and a third...) this cat still won’t eat. The grazer visits the food bowl regularly and has a few bites, then leaves. The grazer is in no hurry. With this type of cat the food bowl usually has uneaten food in it all day long.

What’s important about feeding your cat (besides the obvious goal of preventing starvation) is that you come to know his feeding habits, so that you’ll know when he is off his feed and keep him healthy.

Kittens need as much as double what an adult cat needs. And they need to be feed 3-4 times a day. Adult cats should be fed at least 3 times a day.


Goodness this thread has drawn out some very bad advice. Readers beware.

I give my 20yr old cat a small can of wet food in the morning and another after suppere he also has a bowl of dry food he can nibble on anytime he likes,for his age he seems healthy and active,
