My dryer died so I ran a line from the dining room to the bedroom and put my clothes on it. My cat hid under the easy chair in the living room and wouldn't come out all day. I did it again a week later and she did the same thing I took the clothes down at noon and at 6 pm she finally came out slowly all hunched down and looking up where the line had been. What's going on in her furry little head??

Cats are just naturally scared and suspious of ANYTHING that is done or changed to their living space. Kitty will get used to it. Just be sure the line has no way to hurt or get the cat tangled up in it. Cats seem to NEVER forget anyone or anything that has harmed them.

That's generally true with most cats. In the OP's case there's the added factor that the "strange change" is high up & over kitties head. That fact is likely making the effect worse. She may get used to it, and then again she may not. Hopefully the dryer can be repaired soon and the clothesline won't be needed. It's causing stress & upset to the cat that may not go away.

OP, can you make something for the cat to climb on, that would be higher than the clothesline? Maybe if she could look DOWN on the clothesline, it wouldn't freak her out so bad.

Just get a couple of clothes drying racks instead.

Cheap, won't scare the cat and can be used forever.

Is it breezy there so the stuff flaps in the wind? Even worse. Poor kitty, she just doesn't understand it. But getting her above it really might help.

Something drastically changed in kitty's world. Scents, human upset about the dryer, things not where they are supposed to be and threatening over head. Let's hope the dryer will be back in business soon. Please give as much attention ans assurance as you can to your furry friend.

I can hang pants and shirts on my pull-up bar and exercise bike. She doesn't mind that. The first time I had the line out it was pretty close to the ground so I put it up higher - height didn't make a difference. I'm not doing it again - I'm not putting kitty through that terror again.

That's interesting . Glad you're concerned about your cat's comfort.
And thanks for the update.
