I guess that's what happened. It's completely gone.

Anyone ever seen this happen? He does tend to gnaw on his nails but never seen him pull one out completely....ouch.

I didn't even know it was possible for a cat to do something like that. Or anybody else for that matter. Imagine trimming your fingernail and the whole thing comes off?

Sounds like maybe something was wrong with the toenail?

Just realized this was in the cat forum not the dog forum! I never had a cat pull out the entire nail. I'd watch it closely for signs of infection.

Yes, I worry about infection.....he lets me look at it, so far not swollen and doesn't seem painful...

I just don't know....he really had to have yanked hard for that to happen.

If there's no blood or wound that you can see, maybe it just came out on it's own for whatever reason. Never heard of that happening, but I've never heard of a cat pulling out it's own claw either.
Haven't a clue really.
I guess if he's walking on it ok, and there's no injury/infection, then not much to worry about. Definitely keep an eye on it though.

I understand there's a lot of blood in that area. If that's true usually and you are seeing no blood...wonder if there was some sort of trauma.

Interesting it doesn't bother him and he has no problem with you touching him.

Personally, I'd take him to the vet to have the wound/whatever checked out to be sure there's no risk of infection and that there's no problem that caused lack of pain in that are and the nail to come out.
