I am going to be traveling the end of August. Driving from SC to MO. 985 miles.

Now, I am considering taking along 2 of my 4 cats. But something just occurred to me. I will be by myself, with the 2 cats. Getting food and just generally stopping at rest stops is no issue. But how will I manage those times I must stop for restroom breaks. ?

It would mean leaving the cats in the car....car running with a/c? If there isn't a good plan for this major detail, I may have to leave them home.

My trip will consist of 4 days max. 1 day drive-17 hours. 2 days with family. 1 day drive back to SC.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

TIA

Is there a reason you'd bring two of the cats along?

IMO, I'd leave the cats at home. There are few cats who would enjoy a trip like that, and you also risk upsetting the 2 you leave at home because of the household changes.

Agreed... don't bring the cats.

If leaving them home is any sort of option, leave them home. Cats like their home turf, and most do not like to travel. I've never taken cats on car rides unless it was necessary, which includes a couple of long moves. It was not fun for them.

Oh, I am researching that option also. I have 4 cats. And a small flock of chickens. And one husband who apparently is incapable of taking care of them. He is Aspergers.

I went out of town once. By myself. He totally spaced the chickens one day. May temps. SC. No water. He fed them, then forgot to let them out of the coop.

I thought I would just research it if possible.

Oh, and he hates the cats. grrr.....

"Hates the cats" ?? would he be kind to them or not ? Feed them etc. and clean the litter? I would have someone come in to the house for a friendly visit while you're gone and make sure he and the kitties are all right.

Oh no. I am currently communicating with my next door neighbor lady to do the cat chores along with the chicken chores.

Husbands father taught him some awful habits way back in the 60's. The dad would apparently shoot any and all cats he spotted around his property.

Next door neighbor lady is in her late 70's. Husband is 63.

I may end up just cancelling the trip if I can't get husband to co-operate or at least be decent to the animals.

Do you have a vet you use? Call and ask if any of the techs there do pet sitting on the side. Or ask if they can recommend a professional pet sitter. We have a professional who we've used for several years. She comes as often as we want and we pay per visit. I'm sure that a pet sitter would also care for some chickens in addition to the cats.

Your husband would actually hurt your cats if you were away???? That's a bit concerning.
