Cat lovers may be interested in the following article that appeared in the August 4 Washington Post:

Cat fight at U.S. Embassy in Kabul - The Washington Post

In essence: 25 to 30 feral cats that have made their home on the grounds of the U.S. Embassy compound in Kabul, Afghanistan, may -- on the orders of senior embassy officers -- be exterminated as a public health threat unless they are adopted by the diplomatic staff stationed there and/or sent to the U.S. It's still uncertain what exactly what will happen to those cats left behind. It should be noted that a lot of embassy staffers are very unhappy with this policy and are working to save the cats.

For a contrasting and far more uplifting story on cats in Afghanistan, check out the following photo gallery that also appeared in the Post about some kittens adopted by U.S. Marines stationed in Afghanistan:

Kittens in Afghanistan rescued by Marines

Semper fi, Marines! You guys rock!

If they get rid of the cats, through relocation or other means, they're shortly going to see a huge increase in the local rat and mouse population, so it's a short-sighted policy in more ways than one.

Default Thanks!

For the story about the Afghany kittens : ) Am currently working to get my neighbors to accept a small feral family of 4. Maybe this article will help!

On another note, why don't the Afghanistans spay & neuter their animals if they're so offended at their presence?

gimmee a break

Very few Afghans have pets. That is basically not part of the culture. Plus, they are expensive to feed and most Afghans are having trouble feeding their families.

Even most Afghans in the US do not have pets. That is changing, however, thanks to the 2nd generation of kids who want pets like their friends have.

I notice that there are certain cultures religions that do not have animals. I had a Korean friend who told me most of them do not like Cats in his country and I hear that Hassidic jews do not allow animals
