since I have a 4 bedroom house and it's just me and my husband, I put a baby gate in one of the spare room doorways and it is the cat room. It's where they have their litter and also where they can get some peace and quiet from the dogs....
My condo is small, so I keep it at the entrance way, and I bought a room divider to keep it out of sight from the rest of the place. I do need to clean it regularly - a coupe of times a day, and that helps keep the place odor free.
We have two bathrooms so I put the kitty litter in the guest bathroom right next to the toilet. If you have a spare bathroom you rarely use, perhaps you could try putting the litter box in the bathtub or shower stall? My cat kicks up litter EVERYWHERE everytime she uses the litter box. This way the litter is prevented from getting all over the floor.
I put one litter box in a bathroom, one in the living room, and one in the utility room. I always get the scoopable litter - and make sure to scoop daily. I also put a scrap of carpet (or a mat) under each litter box for easy cleanup.
........
Now we're down to one cat and one dog, and I use one of those BoodaDome litterboxes.
My dog's head is too big to stick inside the entry hole.
My dogs' heads are too big, also, but they fling the top up with their noses! And they are strong enough to get it off even with the little clamp things in place. So, I keep it in my bedroom, on the far side of the room where I don't see it when I come in. I use a child's gate across my bedroom door so the dogs can't come in, they have the rest of the house to roam around in.

That's ingenius! I don't have dogs but if I did I'd do that too!

Yeah mine does as well. I do have a litter tray (UK version - lol) just inside the back door in a little alcove where I keep coats and shoes, but he never really goes near it any more - it just stays there in case of bad weather/ emergencies/ to take up space.
I wish our 2 house/outdoor cats would use a litterbox. We have to let them out whenever they need to 'go'. I have 2 boxes, with differant types of litter, one in the livingroom back of the wood stove, and one in the spare bedroom. The oldest will rarely use one to pee.
I am up and down all night letting them out and in. :-(
I live in a two-bedroom apartment with two cats. One litter box is in the bathroom between the sink and the bathtub. I put newspaper down to absorb the litter that's flung here and there. The other box is in the kitchen, in a lower cupboard which is always kept open. Not an ideal solution, but it works. I also scoop often to keep any odors down.
