Good pm everyone. Well just last week we fled our apartment in Charlotte, NC to be out of the path of a tornado. I grabbed SBC and stuffed him into his carrier. He ended up going to the bathroom (both of them) in carrier because he was obviously freaked out. We waited it out and when we got back home, I washed him. I towel dried him as best as I could but of course he was wet for a couple of hours. (this is not the first time I have washed him and normally he goes outside and sun dries himself. However, being so we are in an apt, he stays inside) Now he's sneezing and got the sniffles. I'm assuming it will just pass or should I take a trip to the vet?? So wish he could drink chicken soup

I have a cat that has this chronically. I was told by the vet that when cats are stressed, that this can happen. The vet said it's like a herpes virus and that there isn't much you can do to control it. She suggested Lysine added to their food... helped mine. It boots their immune system.

Mine gets sniffly every now and then. I used to take him to the vet, who would feel his ears, stick a thermometer where the sun doesn't shine, announce he had a slight temperature and give him antibiotics.

Eventually I decided that couldn't be doing his immune system any good, so I let him ride one out. Since then I don't think he's sneezed more than twice!

And his ears are always quite warm anyway...

LOL-I'm thinking the stress of the fast stuff into carrier and the washing just did it. I'll keep a close eye on him to be sure and if I think anything serious his happening I will get him checked out. So far he's completely normal just sneezing and stuffy.

Well I hope he feels better soon. Glad you got out of the way of the tornado and I hope things get back to normal for you and SBC!

That's common practice, and even though most "sniffles" are viral and the antibiotics won't help that, recurring viral outbreaks can compromise the immune system so the antibiotics are given to ward off secondary bacterial infections.

The trouble with that is that overuse can create resistant strains of bacteria that not only make it harder to treat the individual cat, but can find their way into feral colonies and back into the general domestic population.

But, that shouldn't stop anyone from using a good, wide spectrum antibiotic like Clavimox whenever it's indicated, especially for obviously bacterial infections.

If the sneezing does not stop I would take him to the vet. My oldest has a history of upper respiratory infections and has been given Amox-Clav in the past. Hope kitty feels better

Default cat colds

the first time I boarded my two, they both ended up with sinus infections. after that, every time Bubba feels 'stressed" he starts sneezing and wheezing. The vet checked him a few times and did the antibiotic route, but rest and calm helped more. She said if the allergy type sneezing, watery eyes etc, give him 1/2 a benadryl. that's a fun site, me splitting a benadryl and chasing him around to throw a tiny 1/2 of a pill down his throat, it coming back out and him slobbering more than a St. Bernard to rid himself of the flavor. slime spitting everywhere and the da** pill is missing. gotta find it so Annabelle doesn't eat it.

And if I succeed, he sleeps and snores like an old drunk sailor for 4 to 6 hours, then glares at me like "what have you done to me". thank goodness, we haven't had that issue in a couple of years.
