My cat has an automatic litter box and I do love it but he climbs in there and plays and throws litter around. I understand they have to cover up what they do in there but he is in there for at least 3 or 4 minutes flipping litter to the side and then the motor on the litter box has to work so hard to get the litter spread back out that it sometimes won't turn off. Do your cats play in their litter box.......just curious.

Some do. On clean clay litter it is the only dirt our indoor cats have contact with. That was our guess anyway.

Just about all of them did as kittens. I used to cringe to come in and find one or more of them rolling around in it! But they eventually out grew the "urge".

Mine did when she was still under a year. What a mess!
But she grew out of it.

Default cat olympics

My mom had a kitten she was trying to train to use the litter box. She closed her in the kitchen/den with food and litter during the day, she was home all this time. She heard a funny noise and went to see what was going on and found the brat cat running from the fireplace in the den through the kitchen and diving in the litterbox, scattering litter then back again. Jumped on the raised hearth, caught her breath and another lap through. scatter then back to the hearth. Said she stood there for like 15 minutes watching this silly kitty, called me to tell me about the kitty olympics and the cat stopped. She swept up the litter and never had another problem with the kitten using the box!!. Just had to get adjusted on her terms I guess!

Your mom's kitten sounds so cute!! I wouldn't like to clean up the mess though.... I just discovered that my beloved Siamese shredded my favorite book. Honestly, why do we love kitties....
