We have 2 neutered male cats, they are brothers and are usually very close, lately on occasion they have been avoiding each other and start hissing, at each other , they are about 2 yrs old

I would just separate them for a while and hope it gets better. Otherwise, one of them may not be feeling well, and therefore may be easily irritated or instigated by the other. I've never heard of that but, hey- cats can be alot like people, maybe its just a sibling quarrell : )

Agree it could just be a sibling thing but, just in case, keep an eye on them as it's possible that one of them could possibly be coming down with something. You said that it's only "on occasion" they've been doing the avoiding/hissing routine but if it continues and becomes more than occasional then it could be a health issue with one of them. Hope that helps.

It could also be a dominance issue, now that they are mature. If it doesn't come to actual bites, let them work it out.

I agree with SouthernBell, let them sort it out if it doesn't get too rough. I have two neutered male cats too, and they do play rough all the time, but without injuring each other. In any case, keep an eye on them and if it gets too violent, separate them.

Now that they're both coming of age/maturity they might feel more competitive of each other than when they were younger. Just a phase probably like other "kids" go through.

It's normal actually. As long as there's no blood being drawn let them play
