I have this huge black Maine Coon cat that is the most lovable cat in the world...actually, almost too lovable. But he has this strange habit. If I have a relative or friend over, he will urinate on something that belongs to them. It could be inside their luggage, or on their coat or sock or whatever. It's very annoying, its almost like he's marking them. Also, if I leave on business for a few days he will urinate on something like my gym bag, or on clean laundry or something. He normally uses his litter box regularly with no accidents otherwise..
I have a Ragdoll cat that does the same thing! I cannot get my luggage out early before I go out of town because he will urinate on it. When I return, I have to unpack quickly, put everything away and store the luggage immediately to foil his attempts to sabotage my clothes and suitcase. The vet said he is angry at me for leaving him. In other words, he's a pissed off cat!
That was my first thought too. Though I do believe if the cat were not fixed early enough, it could still have that instinct to mark things. I had a cat that did the same thing, and my MIL had two cats that would do it as well. All had been neutered.
My mixed breed shelter cat definitely has some maine coon in him and while he does not mark luggage, he claims it as soon as the zipper unzips.

My cat is neutered. I read in Cat Fancy that cats don't react this way out of "anger", that cats don't express (complex) emotion this way, the same with reacting with jeolousy. I don't know?
I have a cat who has done something similar if I go out of town she would pee on my bed, on the clothes of the person staying at the house to take care of her and the dogs. She is neutered. My vet said the same thing.. she was mad at me for leaving her. She only did this when I left her.
Now, that being said fast forward a few years later, she started pee'ing on my bed EVERYDAY and/or another bed in the house, any clothes of mine she found in the laundry room. I was at home too. This time it turns out she was diabetic.
I have a urinator as well. Any changes to my routine, or sometimes I think its just spite work but I sometimes find surprises on laundry or a bag left out or a blanket or something. I had to even throw out a few cat beds after I returned from a trip. I have checked the urine with strips after catching the cat once. All was in order so I assume it has to do with my routine.
