Which gender, and why?
And what combo seems to work better, assuming they have been neutered and spayed-when you have more than one cat?
Here is what I have been told:
Male and male-OK. They will roughhouse a lot, but a good combo.
Male and female. Good
Female and female: Poor. Much jealousy and "cattiness" no pun intended-
We have 3 females and 1 male. Ages 8 to under a year. Everyone gets along fine. Very few squabbles.
I really can't say that I prefer females over males or visa versa. They all have their distinct personalities... good and bad.
My dad and brother. Oh my. Last I knew, of the cats that actually stayed inside all the time, probably 3 females and 5 males, with another female and a couple males that come and go as they please. All seem to get along just fine.
My experience has been that the males tend to be more affectionate than the females although the females can be just as if not more. I have a mixed bag in my house and cats have gradually been added over the years. There is some chasing but there is no science behind who rough houses with who or who is the alpha or any of that. Males chase females, females chase females, females chase males, its a 3-ring circus at times. For the most part, they all get along together. I have had very few issues. I find it comical because I have this domestic long hair fuzzy cat that is...well....she is anti social with the other cats...she will stay around them and be in the room with them but she does not really bother with anyone. I have another female who is like a boss cat. Her name is charlotte and I call her the charlotte monster. She will go give it to any one. But all the fuzzy cat has to do is look at her and its the moaning and hissing and running away..very strange...amusing at times, but strange. And they never got into it with each other either. Its all personality and they all have their idiosyncracies (spelling has to be wrong )
I have four males and one female. I prefer males BY FAR. My males are all super-lovey, my female has three speeds: uninterested, crabby and devil-cat.
Now, I have met some very sweet females before, I just haven't ever owned one.
I have had the same experience, my males are so sweet and dedicated. I have had females from time to time and along with the ones I have now, they just aren't the same.
I have one male and three females. I don't see much of my male until night and then he's next to my pillow to sleep. He's going on 13 and pretty much hides and sleeps all day. The three females are all four and under and very "in your face" type of cats. The youngest tends to stir things up but is always put in her place.
I have 2 males and 2 females now. One female and one male are velcro kitties, the other 2 are more or less attached to me and have to sleep next to me (everyone has their place and you better not get in someone else's place!) but they are just not the cuddle bugs like the velcro ones. However, they all get along and I will find any 2 of them butt to butt sleeping on my bed.
I don't have enormous experience with owning (or being owned by) many cats, but of the ones who have lived with us, in general I found the neutered males to be more laid-back and more affectionate. The females have tended to be a lot bossier, needier and sometimes more aggressive, even when they've been spayed.
I've had many of each, and I think the personality of the individual cat is what matters.
