Instead of pet insurance I figured out what my monthly premiums would be and just set that aside in a seperate account.
I also have a Care Credit card in case I have used my pet savings.
Of course with five animals my monthly premium would be about $120 a month. For someone with only one animal who's premium would be quite a bit less it would take a long time to put away any significant amount of money.
Pet Insurance for your Dog or Cat - PetCare Pet Insurance is the biggest rip off in the insurance industry. When you file a claim, they will look for any way to dismiss claim. When you call, they will hang up or direct you to a disconnected number - Sandy loves to do this. If you do have a claim with Petcare Insurance, start the paper work with NY's attorney general's office. You'll need the AG to get anything out of these lowlifes from Rochester.
When I looked into it, it seemed there were so many exclusions that when compared to my costs at the vet, I would spend less money just paying for it. You spend more for an older pet, but they exclude all those age related costs or charge so much that you don't win.
I would pass on the insurance. I worked at a vet clinic where we dealt with a couple of clients who had pet insurance. Unfortunately, the system is just not set up well. It's usually a system of reimbursement - you pay and MAYBE you get reimbursed, and there's a mountain of complicated paperwork you and your vet have to fill out.
They also often provide VERY limited coverage - like only for vaccines and routine care, which is usually not the most expensive stuff, and (like any insurance company on the planet) they LOOK for reasons to deny you coverage.
I'm hopeful that pet insurance will mature and provide a little more coverage and have an easier claim filing system sometime in the future, but I'm afraid they're just not there yet.
I have never heard anything positive from anyone who tried to file a claim regarding pet ins. It is very limited in just what it covers. You'd be better off saving up in a pet fund as suggested above.
