This is something my cats do that worry me when I'm not at home. They like to sit on top of dvd/vcr player cause it is warm but it also has tiny cooling holes in them.

They sometimes get their claws stuck in these holes and can't get loose. I have found them straining real hard to get claws out of screen, and the front of ac unit air return grids and these tiny holes. The two young ones have had swollen paws in the past and I think this is what happened to them. That they pulled their claws out of a hole and hurt their paws.

I'm not sure what to do about this but it is one of those things you are not aware of till it happens.

I've seen my cat do the same thing with ac vents in the floor. It's a little scary but no harm done.

For the smaller holes, do you keep their claws trimmed? That might help some.
You might want to move the electronic units to a less accessable place and maybe
rig up something more attractive to them, like a cardboard box in the sun!

Just thinkin'. Good luck.

If you can put a grate over the unit it would help. Not only is it bad for the kitties but for the unit. The air holes are to keep it cooled and a warm cat won't allow that. Not only that but they get their fur inside the unit. Or they could topple it. A grate high enough that it lets air through and cats can't sit on the unit would keep your kitties okay and not end up costing you a dvr/vcr.

We have plastic covers over ours that are made for them. They are not expensive. Sometimes you can find them at the dollar stores.

Thanks for replies. I was looking at some type of cover but one that would allow cooling too, so will look for the one mentioned in store.
