Well I think I solved the problem, I asked my mother in law to come stay at my house the three weeks and she said yes. My cat doesn't know her very well, but at least she won't be alone and won't have to deal with the other cat. I think this is best for everyone. Thank you all for the great advise!
Well things changed again, after talking to her daughter, my mother in law has decided she can't sleep at our house because she is allergic to cats Funny that never came up while we were talking. Oh well, she did say she'll come over everyday and change the litter box and make sure she has enough food. I really wish things were different, but there's not much I can do about it.
It's great to have a friend or relative do this kind of favor but personally I'm always worried that because it is a favor and not a profession that there could be slips, especially if the person isn't an animal lover who knows what needs to be done from experience.
If you feel that your MIL will be reliable have her over to show her where your cat sleeps and hides and give her the info re: your vet in case of illness. If you're like me and have a nagging doubt please consider hiring a professional pet sitter. I found ours through the local Chamber of Commerce. The cost is a factor but we budget for it and always have a better time knowing the animals' every need will be met including being prepared for emergencies.
